Why Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.

According to international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team pursue future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
