Torrential Precipitation Worsen Situation for Uprooted Gazans, Agencies Warn
Intense rains over the past week have intensified the extremely difficult living conditions of the hundreds of thousands of uprooted residents in the territory, as reported by aid groups.
"Horrendous" Night Poses Serious Risks
A spokesman described the previous night's conditions as "terrible", with precipitation so heavy that up to 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the streets.
"The recent weather was really terrible for the families. The storms were so powerful... And the gales were so strong," noted the spokesperson.
There is significant worry that children sheltering in tents in damp clothing will fall victim to hypothermia and various ailments.
Fatalities and Widespread Destruction
Health authorities have reported that one baby has passed away from hypothermia and no fewer than 11 other people have been killed in structural failures triggered by the severe weather.
Additional accounts suggest a increased death toll. Authorities reported that multiple residential buildings had collapsed completely and many others had been partly destroyed.
- Nearly 55,000 families affected by rains.
- More than 40 emergency shelters severely flooded.
- Countless residents forced to relocate again.
Aid Efforts Seen as Inadequate
Organizations have increased distribution of tents, warm covers and garments after the ceasefire began, but they emphasize there is continues to be not enough aid reaching those in need.
"We are striving constantly to provide that aid and to allocate it, but the magnitude of the requirements is so vast that we are faced with thousands of families and minors who are genuinely enduring hardship nightly," stated one representative.
Long-Term Issues and Agreement Plans
The subsequent part of the ceasefire includes arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with future administration, the withdrawal of troops, and other conditions.
Relief bodies have underscored the need for "greater and continuous humanitarian assistance to meet urgent and long-term requirements."
The hostilities was initiated by an attack in late 2023. Later actions have caused a high number of lives lost in the territory, as per medical data.
