The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Inclusion in England's Test Series Team
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has hosted several previous Tests.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while additionally strengthening the lower order.
However McCullum has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
