The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
