The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new acronym emerged a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a child who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy in scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are still being committed. The Israeli government rejects these claims, consistent with how it denies all charges it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, although a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that once promoted harmony has devolved into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
