The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Objections by Iran and Egypt

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities in Seattle during next summer’s World Cup are proceeding unabated, despite Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and City Celebrations

Local organizers have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group fixture between Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags inside the stadium.

“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.

Cultural Context Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation declared it did not want to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Symbols

Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums during games. While its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture concept was devised to highlight Seattle’s longstanding tradition of championing inclusion and equality.
  • A design contest is underway to create images to commemorate the occasion.
  • Organizers are committed to ensuring every visitor feel welcome in the city during the tournament.

The Pacific Northwest hosts one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our region,” organizers added.
