Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of classic genre films, also exists.
Audiences will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
