There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

Recently Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating the president had urged him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on this week the American president endorsed a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the war on the present positions.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he said.

Russia has consistently objected against pausing the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, suggesting that freezing the front line would only amount to a brief pause.
