766 and All That - When Cook Conquered Down Under
Alastair Cook's impressive 766 scored by an English batsman in Australian conditions was only surpassed by Wally Hammond
The Queensland capital isn't a place that offers the Three Lions crucial Ashes optimism
In the wake of losing to the hosts at the series start, England have to bounce back before heading to the Gabba, a venue where England have not won for over thirty years
English cricketers have habitually been easy prey in Brisbane
The Inspirational Achievement
Throughout modern times of English disappointments, aspirations and players is a source of inspiration provided by an exceptional player
This marks the 15th anniversary of Alastair Cook dominated in Brisbane through a defining 235 not out, saving the first Test during that famous series paving England's path to their only Ashes series win in Australia during recent memory
Unforgettable Series
This marked the start of the victorious tour of Australia; three hundred-plus scores accumulating 766 runs
The legendary Hammond is the only Englishman to score more runs in a series down under
England won 3-1, with all victories through innings victories
They have not won a Test here since that memorable series
Personal Reflections
"People overlook the difficult moments, the nervousness and anxiety involved in that achievement," Cook recalls
"I look back with pride. My contribution was substantial during a campaign where England triumphed 3-1 in Australia where each victory was achieved comprehensively"
The Road to Greatness
Cook's road to his Australian epic began 18 months earlier at the end of the 2009 Ashes in England
Despite English victory, the opener scored under 25 per innings managing only one innings over fifty
He wanted more
"While cricket involves teamwork, personal performance does make you feel like you want to pull your weight," he states
Skill Development
Two days after the celebrations, he was back practicing numerous deliveries in practice with Graham Gooch
Early outcomes showed promise
Cook made three hundred-run innings on the 2009-10 winter tours in South Africa and Bangladesh
Crucial Turning Points
Upon his return to England for that year's summer, Cook performed poorly
In eight innings against Bangladesh and Pakistan, his highest score was 29
Scoreless overnight at the end of the second day in the third match against Pakistan at the famous ground, Cook was convinced he was playing his final Test performance prior to selection
"I found myself in the hospitality area, seeking the solution in the bottom of a beer bottle," he admits
Critical Moment
The 110-run innings ensured his position in the squad down under
England continued their preparations through successful warm-ups during preparatory contests in Australia
When the first Test arrived at the famous ground, they faced Peter Siddle's hat-trick
Record-Breaking Stand
An hour before the third day's close, Cook and Strauss opened England's second innings with a deficit of 221 runs
The score stood at 19-0 by day's end and proceeded through a demonstration etched in Ashes folklore
"I don't remember the messages, our conversations," Cook remembers
The opening pair accumulated 188 runs in their partnership
His unbeaten 235 stood as the best performance achieved by a Briton down under for 82 years
Complete Control
The English took advantage of an incredible start in the second match in Adelaide
After Anderson also dismissed the opposition player, Australia were 2-3 and struggled throughout
The batsman proceeded his Brisbane heroics by scoring 148 in a Test remembered highlighting Pietersen's dominance over the opposition bowlers
Ultimate Victory
England could have retained the Ashes in Perth, only for Mitchell Johnson to foreshadow the havoc from future encounters
What followed was perhaps England's single greatest day of Ashes cricket down under
At the MCG, the massive stadium of Australian sport, and on Boxing Day, the hosts collapsed to 98 all out
"If perfection existed for Boxing Day, that defined it. There was disbelief at the end of the day," says Cook
Ultimate Success
Motivated by purpose to claim victory, Cook was at it again at the Sydney Cricket Ground
His score of 189 contributed to England's 644, their best score on Australian soil
The debate didn't concern if England would win both match and urn, but the timing
"The atmosphere was incredible," says Cook
"Following Tremlett's wicket of Michael Beer to win the match, it was a moment of complete happiness"
Legacy and Recognition
The batsman received top accolades
The remaining seven years in his international career featured additional achievements
After retiring internationally, he received a knighthood for sporting achievements
